Novel about a photographer who visits a lamasery, or gompa, in Ladakh (northern India) to take pictures of sacred frescoes. There is a snowstorm, and he is stuck there the whole winter.

He discovers an old enemy who resides in the gompa leading the harmless life of a scholar-hermit. The photographer painfully relives the days when he was a prisoner on the River Kwai, where the hermit was his tormentor.
