The Basel Mission archives contain historical photographs, written records, printed and hand-drawn maps and building plans. Missionary collections like this one include subjects and regions often inaccessible or passed over by other photographers.

There are almost 5,400 images of India currently listed, not all of which have been digitized. The online archive is hosted by the University of Southern California (USC). The index is nicely broken up by region, and even photographic studios; the portrait above, for example, was taken at the Bourne & Shepherd studios.

Most of the images are from the late 19th/early 20th century.
