The Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin is home of the famous Gernscheim Collection of early photography. This at the time enormous collection by one of the first and foremost historians of early photography immediately made the center one of the major early photographic archives in the world. Today it holds over 5 million prints.

There are at numerous separate India-related albums, which include works by Biggs, Beato, Bourne, W. Baker, Sache, Deen Dayal, Tripe and many more. Unfortunately, images and specific details are not yet available online.

Helmut Gernschein is author of The History of Photography (World of Art) , one of the first books to bring together material from all over the world in a history of the photographic medium.
