Echoes of Freedom
This exhibition traces the lives of primarily Punjabi immigrants to California from the turn of the century through the 1960s. Recent research into these migrants by scholars and students at the University of California at Berkeley has led to the unearthing of a remarkable human and political story.

Some of the material, presented on the web in a series of well-illustrated and well-written chapters describes the birth of the Gadar Party, a pre-World War I Indian independence movement in San Francisco. The story of the remarkable individuals involved is told through a wide range of newspaper, flyer and other rare archival material.

The story of these Punjabi immigrants, whose ancestors still farm north of San Francisco, and their marriages, for example, to Mexican women due to race laws is one of the more exceptional stories of the South Asian diaspora. The exhibition was curated by Suzanne McMahon, and is based on material now held by the Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley.
