Indian Nobleman
This group exhibition in Dubai in association with the Howard Greenberg Gallery, New York includes work by Margaret Bourke-White, Bourne & Shepherd, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Martine Franck, Bhalu Mondhe and others including anonymous Raj photographers.

From the Exhibit Description

The philosopher Will Durant predicted that although «India has sent to us such unquestionable gifts as grammar and logic, philosophy and fables, hypnotism and chess, and above all our numerals and our decimal system, these are not the essence of her spirit; they are trifles compared to what we may learn from her in the future.» India is often portrayed as the mother of our civilization, and to this day many travelers turn to India as if carried by the hope of reuniting with a long lost relative who will share with them the wisdom of her years. The great physicist Werner Heisenberg once said that «after the conversations about Indian philosophy, some of the ideas of Quantum Physics that had seemed so crazy suddenly made much more sense.»

The photographers united in this exhibition were undoubtedly equally moved by what India has brought them, above and beyond the subjects for their photographs. Their images bear witness of a people and a land so unique, so rich in culture, and tradition and with a generosity of spirit. Ranging from a late 19th century overview of Calcutta to the poignant images of the women of Falkland Road in Bombay, this varied group of images offers a fascinating photographic journey through vast and paradoxical territories.
